"Jim" Basler started fencing in 2009 at Texas State University. He competed with the university team in SWIFA in both Foil and Epee. Jim was elected the President and head coach for Texas State at the end of his academic career, and has served on several administrative councils for fencing throughout the state. He has received intense instruction from some of the best coaches in the world while attending US Fencing Coaches Academy. Later, Jim conducted an apprenticeship under Mark Masters in Philadelphia, as an assistant coach and armorer at Fencing Academy of Philadelphia.
Jim is now the head fencing coach for Comal ISD and Boerne High School, as well as his private club; Hill Country Blades. He is a professional member of USA Fencing and certified coach through the US Fencing Coaches Association.
Coach Basler has developed many student athletes over the course of his coaching career. As the head coach of Comal ISD Fencing, he has overseen the training and competition of multiple Junior Olympic competitors, as well as National Championship competitors. Many of his students now attend (And Fence!) some of the best schools in the state of Texas, including University of Texas in Austin, University of Texas - Dallas, and Texas State University.
Connor Murray started fencing as a student under Coach Jim at the Boerne YMCA. He later helped found the Boerne High School Fencing Club. Connor has competed for BHS and serves as the club's president and interim coach. Connor is a certified coach from the US Fencing Coaches Association.
