Hill Country Blades (HCB) was formed out of a need for high school aged fencers from across central Texas to practice and prepare for competitions. Originally meant to give high school fencers a "home" club, HCB has evolved into a unique entity, separate of the programs that came before it. HCB now provides advanced, competitive training for beginners, as well as students from area high school programs wishing to sharpen their competitive edge.
The program's pedagogy is informed by Coach Basler's time spent at the Fencing Academy of Philadelphia, under the tutelage of Maestro Mark Masters.
Hill Country Blades serves the hill country area north of San Antonio along the 46 corridor. The club is now expanding to Boerne, Bulverde, and New Braunfels.
Memorial Early College High School (MECHS) Fencing Club was founded in the summer of 2016. The high school club quickly helped grow several other high school programs throughout the state, and became one of the best competitive high school programs in Texas.
HCB's origins can, in part, be traced to this club, which operates on MECHS's campus to this day.
